The monumental places we find everywhere in the Costa Blanca require marked itineraries. Every city on the coast or the interior of the province of Alicante has interesting monuments for visitors.
The history of the province of Alicante goes back to 100,000 BC We found numerous prehistoric cave paintings where you can observe, as in the Pla de Castell de Castells Petracos o Twill in Alcoy. From the first settlers found traces Iberians as the Lady of Elche and Lady Cabezo Lucero, or Treasure of Villena, dating from the Bronze Age. From Roman times as important witnesses are archaeological sites such as Lucentum in Alicante, Elche Alcudia, the Portus Ilicitanus Santa Pola or La Illeta El Campello. The Moorish legacy has left a special mark in the path of many historic districts (Monforte del Cid, Biar) and and majestic castles, such as Sax, Elda, Villena, Alicante or Denia. Interesting examples of Gothic art as the churches of Santiago de Orihuela and Villena, and the church of San Bartolomé are preserved in Jávea. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the province knows the biggest launch of artistic expression. Orihuela has a large number of examples of this period, as the Convent of Santo Domingo and the Cathedral. The churches of St. Mary and St. Nicholas in Alicante and the Basilica of St. Mary of Elche are also beautiful examples of Baroque style. At the end of s. XIX arose a new cultural and artistic movement known as modernism, which has left its influence very prominently in Novelda and Alcoy. The Provincial Archaeological Museum, MARQ, declared the European Museum of the Year 2004, contains an important collection of archaeological and artistic heritage of the province.
