Lorcha / Orxa (L')

Lorcha is the last town that crosses the Serpis River in its leisurely course through the province of Alicante on the way to Gandia. Its old name, Perputxent, alludes to the valley in which it is located.

By means of the agreement with Jaime I, Al-Azraq, the Arab caudillo maintained this municipality next to Benillup, Alcanesia and Beniarrés. After the defeat of the Muslim caudillo its domain was transferred to the Templar Order, which governed and extended the castle of Lorcha.

The expulsion of the Moorish destroyed the economy and depopulated the other towns of the domain.

Located on the right bank of the Serpis River, in the heart of the Perputxent Valley, it borders on the south with Sierra de Albureca, on the north with Sierra de la Solana and on the east with Sierra de la Safor.

Most of its lands are rain-fed because of the rugged relief of its area. Despite this, its proximity to the Sierra de la Safor provides an annual rainfall rate higher than the Valencian average. Its agriculture is based mainly in olive trees and cherry trees. Almond trees, fruit trees and all kinds of garden crops complete self-consumption agriculture.

Along the old Alcoy-Gandía railway, crosses the other Barranco de L'Infern: l'Estret de L'Orxa.
