In the Middle Ages there were two population centers, one on the hill of La Mola, which was eventually abandoned and another in the current location of the city.
The geographical location of the town, in the Vinalopó corridor, has made it an industrial and exporting city. Its main economic activities are focused on the manufacture and processing of marble and natural stone which is extracted from the quarries of the district; the packaging and commercialization of spices (especially saffron), condiments and infusions; the cultivation of uva embolsada (type of grape) using an innovative technique that delays its harvest until winter, being these the typical grapes that people consume on New Year's Eve.
